About

Leilah Babirye is an artist who was born in Uganda and now lives in the USA. She was forced to leave her home country, where being gay is illegal, after being outed by a newspaper. She is an artist and activist, especially for LGBTQIA+ rights.

Babirye spent a few weeks at YSP in 2023 making larger-than-life-size sculptures carved from a fallen beech tree from the Bretton Estate. These are waxed a rich black with details added such as parts of a bike that she found.

The sculptures are shown alongside ceramic heads in an exhibition in YSP’s 18th-century chapel. The artworks become a congregation that celebrate community in all its forms.
